FAQ

Travel & Logistics

How do guests get to the lodge?

Guests are responsible for booking their own commercial flights to Juneau, Alaska. From there, we coordinate a scenic 30-minute floatplane ride that lands directly at our private dock in Excursion Inlet. Please note: the floatplane has a luggage limit of 35 lbs for checked baggage, plus an additional 10 lbs allowed for snacks and beverages per person.

When should I arrive in Juneau?

We recommend arriving in Juneau no later than 12:00 PM on your arrival day (Sunday). This gives plenty of time for you to collect your bags, grab some drinks and snacks, and be ready for your scheduled floatplane transfer to the lodge. If youโ€™re flying in from out of state, consider arriving a day early to avoid travel delaysโ€”Juneau is a beautiful place to spend a night, and it helps ensure a smooth start to your Alaskan adventure. When should I book my departure flight from Juneau?

When should I book my departure flight from Juneau?

Plan to depart no earlier than 5:00 PM on your final day (Saturday). Floatplanes leave the lodge in the morning, weather permitting, and land back in Juneau with enough time to catch most afternoon flights. As always in Southeast Alaska, weather can affect travelโ€”booking a flexible or later flight helps ensure an stress-free journey home.

Whatโ€™s the baggage policy for the floatplane?

Each guest is allowed one checked bag up to 35 lbs, plus an additional 10 lbs for snacks and beverages. Space and weight are limited, so please pack light and avoid hard-sided suitcases. Soft-sided duffels work best. If you need to bring extra gear, reach out in advance so we can help you plan accordingly.

What should I pack?

Pack for comfort, weather, and long days outdoors. We recommend:

  • Waterproof outerwear (jacket and pants)
  • Layered clothing (base layers, fleece, wool socks)
  • Sturdy, waterproof boots and a pair of slippers/sandals for inside the lodge
  • Hat, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • Personal toiletries
  • Any prescription medications
  • Snacks and beverages (within your 10 lb allowance)
  • A soft-sided duffel bag (not hard luggage)

Donโ€™t worry about fishing gear or beddingโ€”weโ€™ve got that covered!

Fishing Experience

What kind of fishing gear and tackle do we provide?

We provide everything you need for both salmon and halibut fishing, including quality rods, reels, tackle, and bait. Our gear is well-maintained and suited for the waters of Southeast Alaska, with tackle setups tailored for trolling, mooching, and bottom fishing. From flashers and hoochies to circle hooks and heavy weights, weโ€™ve got you coveredโ€”no need to bring your own unless you prefer to.

What does “self-guided” mean?

Self-guided means youโ€™ll be the captain of your own fishing adventure. We provide the fully equipped boat, all necessary gear and bait, and a thorough orientation to get you started. Youโ€™ll have the freedom to fish on your own schedule, explore the area at your pace, and enjoy a true Alaskan experienceโ€”without a guide on board. Donโ€™t worryโ€”weโ€™re always available at the lodge for questions, tips, and daily advice based on conditions.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yesโ€”all guests are required to have a valid Alaska sport fishing license, and those fishing for king salmon will also need a king salmon stamp. You can purchase both online through the Alaska Department of Fish & Game or in person in Juneau before your floatplane flight. We recommend buying them ahead of time to save time on arrival.

Where do we fish?

Youโ€™ll fish the protected, fish-rich waters around Excursion Inlet and Icy Strait, part of Southeast Alaskaโ€™s Inside Passage. These waters are known for their abundant salmon, halibut, and bottomfish. Our detailed charts and local tips help you navigate the area safely and effectivelyโ€”itโ€™s remote, beautiful, and productive.

What species can I catch during my trip?

Depending on the season, guests commonly catch: King (Chinook) Salmon, Silver (Coho) Salmon, Sockeye, Pink & Chum Salmon, Pacific Cod, Halibut, Rockfish, Dungeness Crab, Coonstripe & Spotted Shrimp

Can I bring my own gear?

Yes! While we provide high-quality rods, reels, bait, and tackle for both salmon and halibut fishing, youโ€™re welcome to bring your own gear if you have favorites. Just keep in mind the floatplaneโ€™s weight limits when packing.

Do I need fishing experience?

Not at all! Many of our guests are first-timers. Weโ€™ll walk you through how to use the equipment, read the charts, and safely operate the boat. Whether youโ€™re a seasoned angler or just starting out, this is an adventure anyone can enjoy.

Is there cell service or Wi-Fi?

Yes! Despite our remote location, the lodge does have cell service and basic Wi-Fi available. Coverage can be spotty on the water depending on your provider, but youโ€™ll stay connected enough to check in, share photos, or keep in touch with home.

Lodging & Amenities

What are the rooms like?

Our lodge features four spacious guest rooms, each with one full bed and three or more twin bedsโ€”perfect for groups, families, or fishing buddies. Rooms are clean, cozy, and stocked with fresh linens, towels, and the essentials for a comfortable stay in the Alaskan wilderness.

Do you have electricity, hot water and heat?

Yes! Even though weโ€™re remote, the lodge is fully equipped with electricity using a 50,000 watt generator during the day and a smaller, more fuel efficient generator at night. After a long day on the water, youโ€™ll come back to a warm, comfortable space and hot showers.

Are the bathrooms communal or private?

Privateโ€” each guest room has its own private bathroom with hot water and all basic toiletries provided.

Is there cell service or Wi-Fi at the lodge?

Yes, we have cell service and Wi-Fi at the lodge. While itโ€™s not high-speed internet, itโ€™s more than enough to check emails, message home, or share your fishing highlights.

What meals are provided?

We provide hearty meals throughout your stay, including:

  • Breakfasts with eggs, bacon, pancakes, French toast, and more
  • Daily sack lunches with a rotating sandwich option and snacks
  • Homestyle dinners featuring fresh fish, grilled meats, pastas, and classic sides

We aim to keep you full and fueled for long days on the water.

Do you accommodate food allergies or restrictions?

We do our best! While weโ€™re remote and have limited access to specialty items, we can often make adjustments with advance notice. Please let us know at least two weeks before your trip, and feel free to bring any must-have snacks or substitutions with you.

Can I bring alcohol?

Yesโ€”youโ€™re welcome to bring your own beer, wine, or liquor. We donโ€™t sell alcohol on site, so we recommend picking some up in Juneau before your floatplane ride. Just remember to stay within your 10 lb snack & beverage floatplane limit.

Fish Processing & Shipping

How is my fish handled and packaged?

Your groupโ€™s catch is professionally processed, vacuum sealed, clearly labeled, and evenly divided. We pack everything into foil-lined, 24-hour frozen-rated boxes that are designed to be checked as luggage with your airline. Any special fishโ€”like king salmonโ€”will go to the person who caught it. If you have a long layover or travel delay, feel free to reach out in advanceโ€”weโ€™re happy to help you plan for extra freezer options.

How much fish can I bring home?

You can take home whatever you legally catch within Alaskaโ€™s sportfishing limits. Most guests leave with one to two 50 lbs. boxes of processed fish, depending on the run and how much you fish.

Will my fish stay frozen during travel?

Yesโ€”our boxes are designed to keep your fish frozen for 24 hours or more. If you expect a long layover or overnight delay, reach out ahead of time and weโ€™ll help brainstorm options to keep it frozen throughout your journey.

Can you ship fish home for me?

We donโ€™t offer shipping services from the lodge, but your fish is packed and labeled to fly home with you as checked luggage. If you need to make alternate arrangements, weโ€™re happy to provide advice based on your travel plans.

Adventure & Expectations

What does a typical day at the lodge look like?

Mornings start with a hearty breakfast and a full day of fishingโ€”typically 8+ hours on the water. In the evening, return to a hot shower, home-cooked dinner, and time to relax by the fire or swap fish tales with fellow guests. You set the paceโ€”itโ€™s your adventure.

Can we explore the area beyond fishing?

Absolutely! The surrounding wilderness offers wildlife viewing, beachcombing, and kayaking opportunities. While the focus is fishing, thereโ€™s plenty of quiet space to relax, roam, and soak in the scenery.

Are there bears or other wildlife?

Yesโ€”this is wild Alaska! You may see bears, eagles, whales, sea lions, and more. Most wildlife sightings are from a safe distance, and weโ€™ll go over safety tips during your orientation.

Should I get travel insurance?

We highly recommend it. Weather and travel delays can happen in remote Alaska, and insurance helps protect your investment in case of interruptions or emergencies.

Is it safe?

Yes, but itโ€™s still remote wilderness. We give a thorough safety orientation, provide all necessary boat safety gear, and are always nearby if you need help. As long as you follow the guidance and respect the environment, youโ€™ll be in good hands.
